Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Al Khobar Saves Child Suffering from Lymphatic Fluid Accumulation in the Chest

Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Al Khobar has successfully performed the first laparoscopic thoracic duct ligation in the Eastern Province, ending the suffering of an 18-month-old child who had a severe accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the right chest cavity. The condition caused a range of critical symptoms, requiring the child to be admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for a full month.Dr. Abdullah Al-Wubari, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon and head of the medical team, explained that the child was rushed to the hospital with difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, and swollen legs. He was immediately admitted to intensive care. Given the complexity of his condition, the medical team conducted a series of thorough tests, including MRI scans, nuclear imaging, and multiple blood tests. Results showed a significant leak in the main thoracic duct.The child was placed on a conservative treatment plan, which included the insertion of a chest drainage tube and specialized medication tailored for such cases. However, after a full month of treatment, there was no notable improvement, prompting the team to develop an advanced treatment strategy.A minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure was then performed to precisely seal the thoracic duct. The surgery lasted around 120 minutes and was successfully completed, praise be to God. The child was returned to the PICU, where he remained under close monitoring for two weeks. During this time, his condition steadily improved with intensive care, and the symptoms gradually subsided until they completely disappeared. Follow-up examinations confirmed that the leak had stopped entirely.Dr. Al-Wubari added that the child was discharged in good health and described the case as rare. He noted that this laparoscopic thoracic duct ligation was the first of its kind in the Eastern Province. The success of this procedure is a testament to the hospital’s continued medical achievements and its advanced capabilities, enabling it to offer a wide range of treatment options.​

Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Al-Fayhaa, Jeddah, Performs Complex Surgery to Relieve Young Patient from Severe Arm Pain and Restore Mobility

Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Al-Fayhaa, Jeddah, has successfully performed a delicate surgery that ended the suffering of a patient in his twenties, who arrived at the hospital complaining of severe pain, significant arm swelling, and an inability to bend or straighten the limb, which had greatly impacted his ability to perform daily tasks. This was stated by Dr. Anas Noah, Consultant of Orthopedic and Joint Surgery and a Canadian Fellowship holder in Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Surgery, who led the medical team.Dr. Anas explained that upon the patient’s arrival at the clinic, his complaint and medical history were thoroughly reviewed, followed by a physical examination. It was revealed that the symptoms of pain and swelling had begun months earlier and were progressively worsening, to the point that the patient could no longer carry out his usual activities. He had previously visited several hospitals in search of treatment, but without success.The patient underwent a series of advanced investigations, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), laboratory tests, and a biopsy of the swollen area. The results revealed a large, hemorrhagic tumor measuring 12 cm in length, exerting pressure on the main arteries supplying the arm. This had caused impaired blood circulation and was the source of the intense pain.A multidisciplinary team was formed, including Dr. Fadi Al-Tounsi, Consultant of Interventional Radiology, along with anesthesiologists and intensive care (ICU) specialists. After reviewing all the clinical data and test results, a treatment plan was developed requiring urgent surgical intervention. Two days prior to the procedure, the blood vessels feeding the tumor were embolized (blocked) to minimize the risk of complications such as severe bleeding during the operation.The surgery, which lasted two hours under general anesthesia, involved a small surgical incision, followed by the careful dissection and complete removal of the tumor. The patient was then transferred to the inpatient ward for recovery.Dr. Anas confirmed that the procedure was a complete success, praise be to God. The patient was discharged home within 48 hours in good health and was able to move his arm without pain.​
